Dirk Pleiter from Juelich Research Centre presented the ICEI/Fenix infrastructure and the Human Brain Project (HBP) at the SOS 23 Workshop, which took place in Asheville, North Carolina, USA, on 26-29 March 2019. SOS is an invitation-only series of highly interactive workshops on Distributed Supercomputing organized by Sandia National Laboratories, Oak Ridge National Laboratories and the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre. Participants in the SOS Workshops have been key players in remarkable changes in High Performance Computing over the past two plus decades, and this 23rd annual workshop will provide an opportunity to look toward the future.
In his talk at the Session IV: Exascaling and Federation: Using Brain Research as Science Driver, Dirk reflected the question on how requirements for HPC platforms are changing and consequently influencing design using the brain research community as an example. Based on the analysis of selected science cases, the presentation derived both the needs for federating storage resources coupled to HPC systems as well as the need of providing increased performance. It also described architectural and technical solutions to address these needs, which are currently being implemented.
